Lewis and Faulkner, nothing like Lewis and Clark, except maybe a little, sat at the end of a long table lined with 10 or so chairs all seemingly painted by children less than 7 years old. They sat in the chairs at the end because they were the closest to sit in. They sat across from each other. Lewis, a smaller man, 5’8”, semi-stocky build, sipped from his university alumni mug. In the mug was a combination of sorts Lewis had recently decided to take up drinking on the “reg”: ¹/₂ – Numi Pu×Erh Organic Chocolate Tea, ²/₅ - Coffee, ¹/₁₀ – whole milk. Faulkner enjoyed a simpler cup of coffee. Faulkner, a large man, 6’2”, longer-stronger build, drank from a red cup labeled “PWC.” It’s Friday, and they are both happy about that. However, an hour of work still lies ahead. They discuss the weekend – one has plans, the other does as well, but then again, maybe he doesn’t. Faulkner decides it’s time to go. They stand, push the wildly painted chairs into the table, and walk out the cafeteria door.

Remember that show, “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” I don’t. I mean, I remember the logo – hot Latino looking cartoon with a red pea coat, or something like that… That’s not even the point of this story. I just really liked the title, and the song that goes with it, “Where…in the world…is…Carmen San Diego?” It’s fun. I do think I watched the show once or twice. I just don’t really remember how it went. What did they do? I think she sent in clues as to her whereabouts, and then the kids back on set (some kind of living room) had to figure out where she was based on the clues. Yah, I think that’s how it went. There was also a computer game. I am pretty sure I owned it at some point. I can’t really remember. Maybe it was one of my friends who owned it. I think it was just like the show, except, you actually got to be the kids in the living room. I wonder where Carmen ended up settling down? Maybe she’s still traveling. I wonder if she ever got tired of having to be so incognito? I guess if she is still traveling then she didn’t. Then again, I guess she isn’t doing the show anymore so she can be a little less undercover. She’s probably in Argentina.

Walter, Donny: Donny, Walter (and Frankenstein)

Walter and Donny float, dart, and wiggle their way through a gallon and a half of casually filtered water.

They live to eat, rarely dismissing their hunt for comestibles. They are fed – they feed, and spend the time in between on scavenger hunts for more, swallowing every possibility of tasting greatness to the stretch of eating each other.

Donny turns a quick imaginary corner, catches a peripheral view of Walter’s tail, and immediately opens wide for a nibble. Walter bolts forward, and Donny’s pursuit of filling his belly continues without hesitation.

It’s almost frantic at times, the urgency to eat so great that Mr. Gonzales would lose the race by a solid margin even with a well sliced piece of Beemster Gouda waiting at the finish line.

Logically the cycle makes sense, but it also discursively proves Donny and Walter to be pretty stupid. Especially to Frankenstein, who hangs out in the corner, never moving, always eating, slowly growing, hardy as the iceman himself, planting root for a comfortable future. He’s so solid he graciously allows Donny and Walter free rights to search for fallen scraps and even have a chew from time to time. He knows his place, he knows his purpose, he’s a smart guy.

But it doesn’t matter that Donny and Walter are stupid, there’s no need in their lives for intelligence. All they have to do is swim around and eat.
